Ruben Castillo Boxer Ruben Castillo, a three-time challenger for the world title, was born in Texas in 1957 but considers Bakersfield his true hometown. Castillo started boxing professionally in 1975, fighting 13 times in his first year and winning all, including eight by knockout. The following year, living in Phoenix, he won the Arizona State Featherweight crown. By 1979, Castillo had racked up an undefeated record in 36 bouts, 18 by knockout, leading to his first major title. He earned the United States Boxing Association’s title with a 12-round decision over James Martinez. In 1980, then undefeated in 42 bouts, Castillo received his first world title try. His bout with legendary WBC Junior Lightweight champion Alexis Arguello proved to be a close one, with Castillo leading on one judge’s card before Arguello knocked Castillo out in round 11 to retain his title. |
Castillo again challenged for the title in 1983. He was knocked down in round two by champion Juan Laporte but got off the canvas and won some of the middle rounds before losing a 12-round unanimous decision. Castillo received another title shot in 1985 when he challenged Julio César Chávez for the WBC Junior Lightweight title. Chávez beat him with a sixth-round knockout. Castillo retired in 1995 with a record of 70 wins, 10 losses and two draws, with 38 victories by knockout. |
